After familiarizing students with explanatory/expository writing, I move onto the argument essay. Since students already have a foundation for the other areas of an essay, here we focus on writing a COUNTER ARGUMENT.

This paragraph is tricky -- students learn that they need to honor the opposing argument... but in a way to really support THEIR OWN argument!

This resource uses a relatable introductory scenario (asking a parent for a new cell phone) to demonstrate a simplistic counterargument. Using this, 3 activities allow students to practice the three-fold art of the counterclaim:

-the initial argument

-concession to the opposing argument

-the rebuttal

This lesson takes just under two full class periods, and my students come away from this with solid footing to engage in writing their own counterclaim paragraph.
