Looking for a creative spin on narrative writing and creative writing in your classroom? This assignment is the perfect way to hook students at the beginning of the year.
Students pick a well known fairy tale and rewrite it using the concept of metafiction. This assignment provides scaffolded narrative writing (students don't have to completely invent a plot on their own) but promotes student creativity when it comes to including metafiction. Metafiction creates some of my favorite stories in the first place (hello, The Princess Bride!).
The BEST part?
Choose some of the best selections from your students' writing (class voted or hand picked by you) and compile these stories to create a classroom storybook!
Display the storybook in your room and provide a copy to each student. Note: Be sure to obtain students' permission before including their story in the compilation.
When I did this, I asked my class if anyone was interested in illustrating the cover of our storybook. Several students worked together to produce a beautiful cover, and it made the end product that much more special. Years later, this is something I still cherish, and I bet your students will, too!
