Let students' creativity shine!
Many of my students list this as one of their favorite projects on my end-of-year evaluations. After studying the steps of the hero's journey, students have the opportunity to construct THEIR OWN STORY using those same steps!
Students create a children's storybook using the steps of the Hero's Journey (this project can be modified for any plot type if wished).
Materials Include:
-Project Description (overview & specific requirements list)
-Comprehensive Project Evaluation Criteria: Rubric for project presentation, illustrations, hero's journey steps, imagery, dialogue, language (style), language (mechanics/conventions)
-Supplementary Graphic Organizers: Heroes brainstorm, character development handout, plot development handout, illustration development handout, appositive phrase development handout, word choice development handout
Modifications
You can modify this project for any level. These modifications can be made for an entire class or to accommodate individual students.
- Allow students to create a Google Slides presentation instead of a physical booklet for another digital option.
- Use your school’s printing services to produce pre-made physical storybooks instead of having students make their own.
- Modify the amount of hero’s journey steps required.
- Lower the amount of illustrations required. Allow students to use clipart instead of generating illustrations themselves.
- Compose the ordinary world together for students who struggle with creative writing. Students make up the rest of the story based on the group opening.
- Adjust group sizes/assign specific partners.
