Winter Bulletin Board

Updated: Apr 26

Engage all students with this winter themed bulletin board!

I love classroom bulletin boards that focus on word choice! For this board, give all students in your class a snowflake to color. For a content connection, have students think of unique vocabulary words that spark interest for them. This activity allows your students to honor the uniqueness of each word -- just like snowflakes!

Writing Winter Wonderland

Encourage students to think of some of their favorite words. Then, they can look up synonyms for their favorite word until they find an advanced vocab word. They may need to look up synonyms of synonyms to get there.

When students illustrate their snowflake, have them write their word and its definition around their flake. Enjoy a snow-shower of student-centered vocabulary!

Add-on Activity

Tie in your bulletin board to classroom instruction. Start with your board's main 'man as your writing focus. Have students work individually, in pairs, or in groups to write a poem using appositive phrases about the snowman. If introducing appositives, lead a whole-class lesson where you all write the poem together.

Snowman Appositive Phrase Poem

  1. Write "Snowman" at the top for your poem's title.

  2. Brainstorm several phrases of what the snowman could be doing. Examples: drifting in the wind, nodding to children passing by, etc.

  3. Add nouns at the start of each phrase. Example: Scarf drifting in the wind

  4. Transform your last phrase into a complete sentence. Example: "vibing with the Christmas spirit" becomes "the snowman is vibing with the Christmas spirit."

BONUS Activity

Teaching satire? Adapt your Snowman Poem for the end of the winter season. It's best to start with a poem celebrating the Snowman (see activity above). Then, students can have some fun imagining what happens to a melting snowman. Jot down these phrases to create appositives and be sure they include nouns at the start of each line.

This activity will be a sure way to teach grammar skills and ensure a few seasonal-themed laughs along the way! Poor snowman.
